OTTAWA -, June 3 /PR Direct/ - The Canadian Labour Congress welcomes as positive steps forward the legislation introduced to create the Wage Earner Protection Program and the amendments to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) that relate to workers' wages, benefits, pensions and collective agreements. "These measures are about balance and fairness to workers and their families," says Hassan Yussuff, Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress. "The Canadian Labour Congress has been calling for years for this kind of measures to ensure workers' interests are protected in the event of business bankruptcy or insolvency. We can look forward to a time soon when the law provides employees with a higher certainty of payment of their earned wages, benefits and pension at a time when their jobs are on line because of the employer's insolvency." Yussuff expresses hope that the federal Parliament will move quickly to adopt this legislation because Canadian working people have waited too long already for these protections.
