Royal Visit at Toronto General Hospital
Their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex Rededicate Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at Toronto General Hospital

Toronto, ON, June 2 /PR Direct/ - Their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex celebrate the rededication of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at Toronto General Hospital on Monday, June 6, 2005.

"It is an honour to welcome The Earl of Wessex back to Toronto General Hospital and we are especially pleased that Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex is joining him on this trip, said Philip S. Orsino, incoming Chair, UHN Board of Trustees. "The rededication of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the people and the technology that make the PMCC Canada's leading cardiac centre."

Since it first opened in May 1996, the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre has earned an international reputation for the development and application of leading cardiac and cardiovascular medicine. Each year, approximately 17,000 patients are treated at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, and 2,000 patients undergo open-heart surgery. By concentrating all cardiac activities into one program, the Centre brings under one roof the finest heart specialists and the latest technology from across North America and around the world.

The multidisciplinary heart team includes physicians, surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, pathologists and other allied health professionals with special training in cardiac conditions and treatment. Each year, innovative surgery techniques and outstanding cardiology interventions attract hundreds of visiting professors and trainees from around the globe.

This is The Earl of Wessex's second visit to Toronto General Hospital. In June 2003, he celebrated the dedication of the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine and the opening of the Surgical Centre. These two visits further the legacy University Health Network enjoys with the Royal Family. Princes Margaret Hospital, one of the three hospitals that comprise University Health Network, is named after The Earl of Wessex's late aunt, Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret.

University Health Network draws on the combined expertise of our three leading hospitals to make success stories happen every day. Over 10,000 healthcare staff work at Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. We attract some of the most brilliant professionals in the world. We invest more than $100 million annually in research. We train over 3,500 future healthcare professionals each year. For more information please visit www.uhn.ca.

Media are invited to the event, which begins at 1:30 p.m. on June 6. For more information, including parking directions and a speakers' list, please call the listed contact.
